CHARACTER NAME: Maya Amano CANON: Persona 2: Innocent Sin CANON POINT: End of the dungeon Xibalba, post everyone’s conversations but not into the actual alien spaceship and related fight. BACKGROUND:Wiki link SUITABILITY: I think Maya would be curious and interested in the world, how they got here and how this is happening. And want to generally help out the others here, in a similar way to becoming Big Sis for the other kids. (I think, also… the voice vaguely reminds her of Philemon? I’m sure it’s not, but. Yeah! Curious.) Her generally friendly persona could be good in trying to help others get along, but I’d also like her to be able to rely on others too. Morality-wise, I think Maya has some strict ideas about what people should do and be- but she also seems very good at compartmentalising. I think she could get that challenged in Bottlecap Bay, or double down on that.
She’s kind of a ‘make the best of the situation’- her motto is ‘let’s positive thinking!’ (I’m kind of twitchy about using mottos, but it’s very much her thing). I think she genuinely didn’t want to hurt the kids with the knowledge she was moving at the end of the summer ten years prior to Innocent Sin’s events, but I don’t think she was expecting it to turn out the way it did.
I’ve chosen to take her from a bit before endgame, as I think that’s where she has the best understanding of what’s going on in Sumaru without tipping too much into the endgame situation. That one might be trickier in terms of her reaching out to other people, and so that’s something I’d like to put her in further down the road.
QUESTIONNAIRE:
⟡ Your character is on an exploration quest when they find an injured Pokemon in need of help. This Pokemon appears to be in distress and is quite dangerous, posing a risk to your character even if they mean well, and putting your quest mission at risk. What do they do? What are some possibilities of how they work with teammates to address this, or do they go at it alone?
Maya would want to try to help them at least get less distressed, asking the team if she can stay and try to calm the injured Pokemon, since that’s something she could do that would be useful. She’d be more likely to try to help them, regardless of the danger to herself, if they seem to be younger than her, as that’s something she did with Akari in the Aerospace Museum. She assumes the mission is still important, so she’d try to work with the others to work out if they could get that done too if they split into groups. If they can get some contact back to the base, that would be ideal!
⟡ Your character's worst enemy has recently appeared in game, and has joined the guild your character is part of. They both want to tackle the same quest, and your character's enemy suggests that they work together as a team to accomplish this goal. How does your character respond to this?
Oh boy. My immediate thought for ‘worst enemy’ is Tatsuya Sudou, the person who set fire to the Alaya Shrine while Maya and Tatsuya Suou were locked inside. Honestly, she’d be stressed knowing he was alive and in the Bay, let alone being part of the same guild- the first time Sudou meets the group . She’d have asked others to keep an eye out on him, as she can’t do that herself in the Bay, and possibly to let her know what he was doing, with the intent of staying well away from him. She would not want to work with him at all, and most likely refuse, while being extremely wary of his reaction.
⟡ The leader of your character's guild has just approached your character with an offer: they will provide your character with extra supplies, reputation points, and help them with any of their current struggles. In exchange, they ask for your character to do a favor for them that may harm the other guilds, and will not specify what the favor is in advance. It sounds shady, but it's the deal of a lifetime in your character's path to get back home, and refusing it may cause strife for your character within their current guild. What do they think of this offer? What do they ultimately decide to do? This seems deeply worrying, even suspicious! A little like being offered a surprise promotion, but- for what? Why her, specifically? Why not anyone else? Maya would try to probe further about why they would come to her! And then, probably ask for some time to think it over. But it just… seems unfair to everyone else, and ultimately she turns it down as politely as possible. She’s worried about the others back home, but- everyone here is working hard, too! So she can’t just take it. Shouldn’t they be cooperating with each other, too?
⟡ Due to shortages on supplies, the city is facing issues deciding where to cut corners during this rough time. Somehow, the responsibility has fallen on your character's shoulders, and they have to make a decision. If they send out an extra team of Pokemon, they will be able to gather more food, and through that, save the lives of dozens of starving Pokemon that were in dire need of nutrition. However, the only Pokemon available to scout for food are those working at the pokeclinic, and sending them out would mean certain death for at least two ill patients. What does your character decide to do? How do they feel about this choice, and how would they deal with the pushback that comes from either side?
That’s a pretty stressful thing to land on anyone! Maya tends to guide the group and encourage them on for most of the game, so making decisions isn’t something she’s unused to…. It hasn’t really been to this degree, though. Maya might dither over making the decision, weighing up the numbers. Again, in the Aerospace Museum, the group makes sure to get all of the children out of the rooms and rescued via the blimp. She encourages the group as they’re going through the trapped rooms in Xibalba. In the end, I think she’d try to stretch the rations that were there out as much possible, because it would sit badly to definitely leave those Pokemon who needed treatment to die. At the end, she doesn’t want to be a burden- so whatever the bad consequences were, I think she would take them, compartmentalise, and try not to deal with them.
POKEMON: Clefairy. I wanted to pick a Pokemon that kept a connection to the moon! Their connection with meteors also seems kind of relevant, and visually I think it works too, between the colours and shape. Maya’s abilities tend towards magical, and I think Clefairy’s Fairy type suits this, along with the ability to learn a variety of types of moves. GUILD OPT-OUT: No strong opinions on this.
